Your Individual Education Meeting is one of the most important components of Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery. At this meeting your child has an opportunity to discuss their passions, interests and needs and be a major part of the decision making around their learning for the coming term. The child, parent(s) and Learning Advisor negotiate together to create an individual learning programme that meets the needs of the child. As the first educator of your child you play a major role in the direction of the learning for the term ahead. You should also expect to hear about how your child has been going with their previous term’s goals and be able to factor this information into what goals are set for coming term.

It is absolutely imperative that we have one of these meetings per term to create the plan for the term that follows. IEMs take place on a needs basis. For most children it takes place at least once a term, but can be as regular as needed. These meetings are not optional and you do need to book one.

In preparation for the upcoming term we would like you to spend some time looking at the four documents at the bottom of this page and completing before your IEM. We would then like you to bring them with you to the IEM.

Document 1 – Passions and Interests

We have created a simple mind map blank for you to fill in with your children. We have also added in an example of what this could look like. As it says on the form, it’s an opportunity to look at what the children are interested in at the moment and either be able to use this in their personal goals for the coming term, Learning Stations, homebase programmes or just as information for parents and LA’s to be aware of.

It will be extremely helpful if you can spend some time looking at and filling out these documents before your arrival at your IEM.

Document 2 – STEPS

This document is for you and your child to do some initial planning around their goals and Intentions for the following term. It gives you the opportunity to help identify their strengths, the things they are struggling with and to suggest some possible ways forward and some goals that you as a family believe will be suitable and productive for the following term. This is predominantly for reading, writing and maths. There is an area for “other”, this could be pastoral care needs, inquiry ideas, self direction needs. We have the Passions and Interests document that focuses solely on you child’s Passions and Interests, so don’t feel the need to squeeze it into the STEPS form.

It will be extremely helpful if you can spend some time looking at and filling out these documents before your arrival at your IEM.

Document 3 – Collect Connect Create Project Proposal – optional

We are also including a Collect Connect Create Project Proposal for you to potentially use to help shape your children’s personal inquiries/projects. This is something your LA may or may not need you to do depending on the Homebase they are in. It gives children the opportunity to start to think about the Inquiry or Project that they are planning and decide on the key elements of this.

Document 4 – Collect Connect Create Action Planner – optional

We are also including a Collect Connect Create Action Planner this document takes the Project Proposal to the next level. Asking the children to really start to look at the specifics of what they want to work on. You will notice that this document has 3 different areas; Collect, Connect and Create. If you notice, in each of the areas the types of verbs become more complex as you work through the document…the verbs in the Collect area are much easier to achieve than the ones in the Create area. The Create area really starts to ask the children to tap into their Higher Order Thinking skills.

When using this form you would be looking at the Inquiry/Project you are working on and relating the verbs in each area to this. Using the verb and the key sentence to create and Action that is specific to your project. See an example below.

e.g –
Collect – Find – Find all the different types of available power sources in New Zealand.

Connect – Compare and Contrast – Compare and Contrast all types of available power sources in NZ. Focussing on cost, ease of use, environmental impact and sustainability.

Create – Justify – Justify that all NZ homes should move to Solar Power by 2025.

I have only fleshed out three of the verbs, one form each area. You might need to do multiple verbs if they are relevant to the Project/Inquiry. As you can hopefully see once this is done it really gives the children a clear picture of what they should now be working towards.

It will be extremely helpful if you can spend some time looking at and filling out these documents before your arrival at your IEM if this applies to you. Please check with your child’s LA if you are unsure.
