Kay’s Community Newsletter 26th Aug

Parents needed on Monday mornings

Recently we have been spending 15-30 minutes on a Monday morning sharing something interesting or inspirational to the community. This has included TED talks, Ritchie McCaw’s Chasing Great and Supersize Me. We would like to begin bringing people in to talk about the interesting things that they do and to share their expertise. We would like to open an invitation to our parent community to come and share their careers or passions and interest and how they came to it.

We know that you guys are doing some really interesting things that could inspire our guys. Please, if you can spare 30 minutes on a Monday morning to share what you are doing let us know.

Community Parent Event Early Term 4

Over the next week or so we will be contacting a few parents to ask if they can help co-ordinate a parent event. It would be great to get everyone together to share all the work students have been doing as well as to have some food and socialise. We are looking to form a small group of parents to put this together and to encourage people to come along. If you would like to volunteer to help with this please email Kay. This would be a great opportunity for people who may find it difficult to help during school hours. It would also be a chance to get to know a few other parents in the school.

Ski Trip Friday Sept 1st

We will send a reminder email out later this week but at this stage please note that you must be at the Unlimited Campus by 6.45. The bus will leave at 7.00 and not wait for anyone. This is because we have to get up the mountain for the set lesson time.

Student Volunteer Army

Lots of you have heard of what the SVA have done over the last 6 years. For the past two years we have had a number of year 9 and 10’s take part in a leadership program with them. This year Mario Wylaars and Ben Manning Smith were involved. Here is an update from them:

Last week, 19 Year 10 students got stuck in with a volunteering project at Victoria Park on the Port Hills as part of their UC Student Volunteer Army (SVA) UCan programme to assist the Christchurch City Council.

The students from Darfield High, Unlimited Discovery, Papanui High, Middleton Grange, Hornby HighCashmere High, and St Margaret’s College were helping to free young plants along a hillside to ensure their continued growth. The students had plenty of fun working alongside SVA executive members who have been mentoring them as part of the UCan programme, which encourages local secondary students to become leaders in their communities through volunteering.

Whole School COL – Friday 15th Sept 6pm – Haeata Community Campus

We will be involved in this and we really hope that many of you can support it. This is a Celebration of Learning for years 1-13 and is the first time we have held a whole school one. This is your chance to come along and see a wide range of learning that is occurring across the school.

This is being held at the Haeata Community Campus auditorium off Breezes Road.
