The Homebase Learning advisor is one of the most critical relationships at all levels of learning at Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery. It is a relationship that is vital for ensuring that students get the support they need to create, follow and reflect on their learning goals.

I am excited to be part of a new program on offer for year 7 and 8 students in 2022. We will be working as a part of a larger year 7 and 8 community with lots of opportunity for varied experiences.
I would like to offer my Homebase the opportunity to take on the William Pike Challenge. We will need to get involved in some Outdoor Activities, some Community Service and some Passion Projects – does that sound like enough of a challenge?! Find out more here.
I have strong expectations around living out our school core values and expect students to know these and at least desire to live up to them – the sort of environment we can create by striving for this should give us the foundation to challenge ourselves with some interesting learning and also…have a lot of fun!

It’s going to be an epic year!
In 2022 my HB is going to be a busy and active HB. No sitting around on devices – well, not much!
I’m really interested in doing a special project around working towards a predator free 2025 and spending some time working at CAC (Climate Action Campus). Visiting different environments, learning about different pests and pest control, and actively engaging in some action, is my plan for 2022. I want to help you with your own projects too and expect you to fully contribute to your own learning. I’ll support you to develop skills and ideas to do the things you love and want to do.

My name is Alex and I am extremely excited to have my first homebase in 2022, with Years 7 and 8 students. My passions and teaching subjects are Physical Education and Health.
I have always participated in sport whether it be netball, volleyball, tennis, badminton and most recently crossfit and touch rugby. However, I am also a great believer in wellbeing, looking after yourself and developing routines and strategies to do so, which has brought me to yoga and meditation.
In our homebase for 2022 there will be a sport and wellbeing focus, aiming to also get out and use the city for our learning. As a member of this homebase I encourage you to want to take accountability of your own goals and learning, while I provide you with 1:1 support each step of the way.
I am here to help you find your pathway, learn from success and mistakes and have fun!

I’m really looking forward to having a Homebase in 2022. One of my main goals has always been to help our students follow their passions and move towards being self managers… our school is here to provide something different for you…after being here since 2001 I have a good understanding of what’s possible and how we can make things work for you.
I love keeping fit, playing and watching sport, I love travelling and I love working with technology. I really love DIY, building, fixing things and designing solutions to problems. I love visual art and wish I had more time to play with this.
So…If you are happy to make mistakes, you want to push and challenge yourself, you want to take responsibility for your learning. Then my Homebase is the one for you! Do you know what your passions are and are you keen to develop a learning programme around these? I’m really keen to help make your passions come to life and this school is the opportunity to make this a reality.

Hi I am Kay Hayes. I am passionate about helping every student find their strengths as well as supporting any difficulties they may have. I love helping young people learn new and different things as well as tackle things they are struggling with. I am a huge believer that everyone can learn even when it seems really hard. It is just a matter of finding the right way.
I am very passionate about this when it comes to students who struggle with Maths and English. I enjoy using projects of learning to tap into each students passions and interests allowing them to follow a theme and find success.
In recent years I have worked with lots of students who have been interested in building, sewing, growing, recycling, crafting, cooking and much more. I love problem solving and finding new ways to do things. I also enjoy supporting students to hold events, give back to the community, cook and sell their food, hold markets, fundraise or more.
I have worked in both Primary and Secondary and I feel like I have a number of skills and empathy that will help students transition from one to the other. It is very important to me to involve parents and whanau and I am always keen to work closely with whanau to support students success.

Let’s Run, Jump, Throw together, and maybe lift some Heavy Objects!
If you love to be active and want to be a better athlete, this HB will be for you! This will be Athletics / Track and Field event focused: sprints, distance running, hurdles, shot put, discus, javelin, hammer, high jump, long jump, triple jump, and pole vault. To top that off we will also work on Olympic Lifting skills.
I want to use my passion and skill as a pretty good athletics coach to give the best option for our and keen active students. Athletics is the main focus but to be a well-rounded athlete there will be a range of other sporting skills developed along with an understanding of nutrition and the importance of sleep for our recovery.
The HB will be using the city as our classroom. There will be a high engagement in digital technology as we will film all our training and upload our crafted work on Youtube, create blogs, podcasts and work the ins and outs of social media. The goal is to create content, not consume it, and learn how our new world of online collaboration can work for us with the use of Trello, Canva, and Adobe Creative Cloud.
A little bit about me. I’m passionate about sporting achievement for youth and providing opportunities for learning new activities. I am an athletics coach with my best achievement being a veteran athlete world record breaker and world champion. I was an ok athlete myself when I was younger where I did the decathlon and won the New Zealand U20 Championships. I currently coach out of the Port Hills Athletics Club and Christs College. I love my tramping. I walked the length of New Zealand on Te Araroa Trail and I love exploring the country with my motorhome and geocaching.

Hi, I’m Beth! I’ve been involved with Ao Tawhiti (in various capacities) for three years. I may never leave. I love books and films and walking and talking about interesting things.
When I’m not at school, and often when I am, I like having discussions with people about the world and their ideas, making stuff (food, laser cutter things, crafty things) and going on walks! I’m an avid board gamer and spend lots of time playing games and designing and making game components!
I’m eager to give everyone in my HB the chance to become cool members of the school. I’ll do this by helping you improve your skills as an Ao Tawhiti student, and giving you the ability and confidence to make wicked decisions about your learning. This means you’ll be: writing your own 1:1s, chasing LAs up to correct your own attendance issues, and reporting to me how school is going. I’ve got lots of cool tips and tricks to help, and I’ll be involved wherever I can, but ultimately you’ll be in charge.
In HB you can expect some fun cooking to take place where you’ll be able to up your skills and try some new recipes you haven’t before. Alongside this, we’ll do other activities together like working on a big project of some sort or playing board games as a group. Regardless of what we decide to do, there will be the expectation that you are involved and a keen participant.
If you are keen to be part of a HB where we all do stuff together, and where you get to take charge of your learning, then come along!

I’m Suze and I am really excited about joining your special kura in 2022.
A little about me. I am a Mum to three children (7,11,12) and also share my home with 2 lovely cats and a crazy dog “Luna”. I love the beach and anything to do with the water. Another passion of mine is cooking and a love for food and the joy it can bring to others.
I want to share a whakatauki that I feel will represent our homebase. He waka eke noa. We are all in this together. I want to create a safe, fun, warm and supportive environment where you feel empowered to achieve your goals and I will be your cheerleader. I’m really keen that as a team we look after each other and learn ways we can support our community.

A few things to know about me are: I love board games, singing, philosophical tangents, learning languages and am an endlessly curious creature. I’m also a proud lesbian and love spending time in nature. I tēnei wā, I’m trying to learn to longboard and nail those pesky barre chords on guitar…
In this homebase, we celebrate diversity, encourage curiosity, reflect on our learning journeys and build each other up. We will co-create the culture of our home base and exercise autonomy and rangatiratanga over our own learning. Whatever you’re passionate about, we can bring it to our homebase time!

Philosopher by day; DJ by night. I love teaching philosophy. It is a joy to work with students as they examine their beliefs and explore new concepts. I teach the subject from year 9 up to undergrad university level. I’ve also published articles and a book in philosophy.
Outside of school I am a DJ. I perform regularly in bars on the Oxford Terrace as well as various other club nights and House music events.
The students that work best with me are those with high academic ambitions who like to get involved in interesting philosophical discussions. I enjoy discussing research projects with students. I’m eager to support students in pushing the boundaries of their knowledge and discovering new ideas.

New kid on the block: I’ve just arrived at Ao Tawhiti. If you love nature, plants and are into sustainability then join our whanau. I’ve worked in horticulture and have recently set up a native plant nursery. If you love tramping and the outdoors and getting out and about, then I also love anything hands-on like cooking and creating.
Your wish is my command – I’ll try and make it happen. Working together in a collaborative team-focused environment will help empower you with the skills you need to succeed in the modern workplace whilst having fun along the way.

Hi! Are you always keen to try new things? How about outdoorsy, adventure-y things? You are?! That’s rad! Read on.
Throughout the year (mainly on Fridays in hapori), I’ll be taking keen students on a variety of outdoor experiences. These will likely include: day/overnight/multiday tramps to amazing places (what’s better than waking up in a hut or tent in a really cool spot with no wifi?!) rock climbing (yes!) rogaining (if you don’t know what it is, but you like running around hills in the dark for points, you’ll enjoy it) skiing, and more (student voice appreciated!)
I’m keen to not only facilitate cool outdoor experiences for you to try, but also to help you find a specific outdoor activity you’re passionate about so you can work on improving your skills, abilities, and confidence as a learner in that area. By the end of 2022, I want you to be able to look back at the progress you’ve made through doing something you love.
When I’m not scrambling around our awesome mountains on the weekends, I’m teaching chemistry at Ao Tawhiti in our fun lab spaces.
Regardless whether your passions and interests lie in the sciences or other disciplines and hobbies, I will be a mentor to you on your own learning journey. I expect students to take ownership of their own journey by being a strong voice in IEMs; by actively setting, working towards, and reflecting on goals in the LMS; by being keen to share successes and challenges at 1-1s; and by seizing opportunities outside of the classroom, and making great use of (and being responsible for) time spent doing self-directed or off-site learning.

I work best with students with a strong academic focus and a clear idea of what they want to achieve. There are currently two main groups in our HB. Everyone is diligently working on an SDL project at some point in their week. The two groups are: Game Design (including some graphic design-Blender, coding-Java, and game building-Roblox) and Art/English (including drawing, character development, and reading/writing). Some students are also involved in dance, swimming, or netball as well as language learning (including Spanish and Japanese).
I can offer NCEA help and support with History, Art History, Design and Visual Communications, Sociology, and Philosophy as well as support in Spanish and Korean language learning.
If you are capable of managing your time well and are interested in directing your own learning within these areas, I encourage you to consider joining our HB.
P.S. We also like to go for short walks around the city or share the random morning tea from time to time.

I am a HBLA in the Y 9-13 community and a Mathematics teacher. As a HBLA I am supportive, organised and can be ‘ on your case’ but always in a caring way with your best interests at the centre of all decision making.
I have been at Ao Tawhiti off-and-on since its beginnings as Unlimited so value what it means for a student to be “directing their own learning”.
The greatest reward in teaching for me is to see my students achieve their goals and mature into young adults.
In 2022 I would like my Homebase members to make the most of my ability to facilitate opportunities provided through the school that are outside of academic classes.

I broach this warm pasifika greeting to you from Te Moananui a kiwa, from the depths of our diversive collective pools. Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Jon. I’m a family man, with a wife and 9 kids. My ongoing passions and pursuits lie within being a portrait and pounamu artist. I am humbled and honoured to be appointed a learning Advisor at Ao Tawhiti for 2022.
Over the years I have had the privilege of having a studio practice and feel that generating art within that space aligns with the student led model this kura is renowned for. We, self led learners are tasked with having to keep the spark of what inspires us burning. My aim within OUR (ownness of our) homebase is to create an environment that supports our learning needs and goals as we tuhono (connect) on a regular basis. I’m really excited to meet those that choose to be part of our homebase team, hmm wonder what we are going to call ourselves.

Ko Jess tōku ingoa. My name is Jess, I am a Science and Mathematics Learning Advisor with a speciality in Biology and Statistics. My passions within Biology are Genetics and Evolution.
I also have a love for indoor plants, as you can see in my photo (That is only a small sample, I have over 30 plants currently in my collection!).
Outside of School, I keep myself busy playing Alto Saxophone in several groups, my all time favourite saxophone solo is cinema paradiso. I also enjoy the odd bit of arts and crafts, such as painting and embroidery.

I dream of “a homebase of action and kindness”. In 2022, I want to learn with a group of students who are prepared to give things a go, who want to develop leadership skills and who will support each other as we navigate the year.
About me. I am into the outdoors, giving things a go and saying yes to challenges. I enjoy running, climbing, kayaking, surfing, snowboarding and biking. I am aiming to complete the Coast to Coast Longest Day in February and want to carry that fitness on through the year.
Some of my interests are snowboarding, surfing, climbing, the outdoors and making stuff. I surprised myself by building a dining table last year out of recycled timber and I am currently training to compete in the Coast to Coast Some thoughts for the year.

A bit about Richard: I really value honesty, so I’m pretty honest with people – criticism can be a really helpful thing if done correctly. I really do encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning and choices; if you’ve ever been in a class with me, you know what you’re signing up for in my Homebase!
I like to discuss how to better oneself: these discussions frequently revolve around diet, exercise, and metacognition (thinking about thinking). I love a good argument, too (although ‘argument’ does not equal ‘fight’)! I will challenge you to better yourself as a person, and to consider why you have your various habits and beliefs (and I often feel like an old man trapped in a middle-aged body, hence the photo).
A bit about Richard’s HB: -High expectations around behaviour, cleanliness, respect and personal achievement. Those students who are willing to push themselves and participate have a really rewarding time 🙂
-We play games together. Strategy, social deduction, geeky, nerdy games. Also, mind games. We like messing with each other, but in a nice way. But I’ll emphasise the social aspect: If you want to be tucked away in a corner, my homebase is not for you!
-We track stuff visually! Stuff like attendance & 1-1s, using Lego 🙂 I’m also toying with the idea of getting us all to track our sleep and water and exercise and diet – basic stuff which people often neglect because they’re not paying attention.
-We fill out our own 1-1s and IEMs, chase up LAs ourselves to correct our own attendance, and we’re held accountable for our own progress in SDL periods (I will give advice and guidance in abundance, and give you the tools to help you manage yourself, but please don’t expect me to be running around after you).

Matt teaches a range of music at Ao Tawhiti, and is an accomplished musician himself. He has a particular passion for the saxophone, and enjoys running the jazz band. He also enjoys a good conversation about politics and social activism.

GEORGE: I’m George. Jo and I share a Homebase that focuses on the needs of the individual first.
Students in our Homebase are encouraged to develop their own unique programme and to drive opportunities themselves: we will be there to support you with what you want to do. Apart from being passionate about the subjects I teach I’m also interested in travel, art, kayaking, global finance and politics.
JO: I’m Jo Bennett. Not surprisingly for an English teacher, books and literature figure quite majorly in my life… happiness is coming home from the library with a pile of unreads or rereads. Environmental issues are pretty major for me, as are my grandchildren. The two being inextricably linked.

Parkes is an odd fellow – often brusque and abrasive, he’ll nag you into submission if you are not keeping up with work. A dark sense of humor, brutal honesty and crushing cynicism act as a surprising contrast to deep underlying (and deeply hidden) optimism.
Aiming to escape the building most Friday mornings in 2022.
Personal interests include Planetary + Space Science, environmentalism, technology, music and sports (especially skiing, kayaking, or anything involving boats).

I’m Kate and this will be my seventh year teaching at our wonderful kura. Originally from the UK, I have made my home in Õtautahi Christchurch where my passions and interests revolve around family, learning te reo, social and environmental justice, and still learning to be a better LA everyday!
In a previous life, I worked for the Department of Conservation, local council, and as an ESOL teacher. I’m a parent of three children (18, 15 and 13.)
As an HBLA, I will work with you to achieve your goals in your way and help you get the support you need to do this. Students in my homebase will need to work together to plan homebase activities, have clear goals for their learning, be respectful towards others, and be honest with me and themselves.

Greg O’Neill

My Home-base has traditionally been a quiet space to get on with self directed project based learning. Ākonga have written fantasy based books to rival the Harry Potter World – they’ve investigated storms – they’ve looked at Fungi and furthered their circus performance and some have just been wonderfully academic; advancing their learning beyond their chronological age.
To sum that up, we don’t care what your passion is, just that you’re passionate and wanting to turn that passion into action.
As for me, my passions are Science (Physics), Maths and bikes. I took up BMX racing with my daughter Courtney (Year 3) a couple of years ago, and haven’t looked back. I share my passions with my class – that can be as varied as biking, to my building projects, or just photos of my dog.
The most important thing we have in common as our respect for each other. So a passion you’re willing to act on; and respect for others is all you’ll need to bring. Having said that, I do expect you’ll follow school processes, because it’s my job to make sure that you do – so you’ll do posts for SDL classes, and OSL, and do a one to one every week. It’s pretty simple stuff, and I’ll do what I can to make it as easy as possible for you.

2022 will be my third year at Ao Tawhiti and I’m super excited to be part of such a dynamic learning community. I am relentlessly positive about my students and what they can achieve, but I also have high expectations that my students work hard to achieve their goals. I look forward to working together to find learning pathways that both excite you and create the foundations required for wherever you want to go.
My goal is to create a positive learning environment within my homebase where every student feels supported in their learning and challenged to achieve their full potential. I enjoy skiing, mountain-biking, rogaines and surfing (I recently stood up on my board for 10 seconds and so may leave teaching to join the pro tour!)
My specialist subjects are Science, Biology and Maths and my passions are environmental issues and sustainability.

Kia ora, I have been a learning advisor since 2006 teaching Mathematics, and Digital Technology. I believe as a Homebase LA I am here to help you transform into a confident, independent learner and my role is to advise, encourage and assist in any way I can (information, motivation, accountability).
All my personal interests revolve around challenges and problem solving. This mostly with involves trying to climb various impossible looking bits of rock but also includes surfing, photography, web design, programming, cubing and DIY. Interests: Climbing Rocks, Programming, Web Design, Surfing, Photography, Adventure.

I am so excited to be the Learning Advisor for Drama. My happy place is supporting students to become confident collaborators and creators, as you use the freedom of drama processes to learn about yourselves and your place in the world.
Outside of school I have many roles: a wife to Dave; Mum to humans, Charlotte and Tom, and dogs, Boo and Bella, and Nana to Evelyn and Elena. My big passions are Rock and Roll dancing, op shopping for bargains and exploring our beautiful backyard.
My belief is that life is an adventure and every day is a new opportunity to discover new aspects about ourselves and the world we share. Our Homebase will be a place of well-being and support, where caring about each other and respecting all passions and interests will be in the spotlight. My school whānau can always expect to find a place of warmth, fun and laughter as we create happy memories of our year together.

Students in this Homebase have a wide variety of interests and SDL projects. We also like to do things together sometimes, such as visiting Tūranga, the Art Gallery and other interesting spots nearby.
I’m a Homebase LA who loves words, language and story. I enjoy reading, films, keeping active and spending time with friends and whānau. Most of all, I’m super passionate about learning. I can help you develop a learning plan that builds on your strengths and interests, and I can support you with navigating NCEA, and managing any online learning you might be doing with Te Kura.
