I started Ao Tawhiti at the start of my year 11 in 2024. Since joining this school I have had access to incredible opportunities that I couldn’t experience at another school, such as undergoing a work experience placement at the pharmacy department of Christchurch Hospital, beginning both NCEA Level 2 and 3, and completing Level 2 early, and taking part in a philosophy university paper as a year 12 student. The university paper in particular has been incredible because it sets me up so well for the academic pathway I hope to go down, and succeeding in this course has given me the opportunity and confidence to pursue my passions.
The input I’ve been able to give over what my timetable, classes, and academic pursuits look like has been wonderful. It has allowed me to tailor my school days to not only what I need to succeed, but also what I enjoy doing. As someone who can struggle with motivation, this has been immensely helpful.
My teachers have been encouraging, helpful and attentive, and in speaking to them I truly feel like we are each conversing equally as a teacher and a student, a very supportive and encouraging dynamic.
Ao Tawhiti has set me up for my life with important skills such as time management, determination, and critical thinking not just about the world around me but about myself as well. The teachers’ perseverance to meet every student where they are at and encourage and develop them as people is my favorite part of this school, and I’m very grateful to the special character nature of Ao Tawhiti that has allowed me to thrive in the environment.
